Teen Patti, literally "three cards", is India's own version of three-card poker. Everyone gets three cards, and the best combination wins. The deal
Teen Patti uses one standard 52-card deck with no jokers, unless you are playing a wild-card variant. Aces normally count high, and in most versions they can also be low in the A-2-3 run.
How hands compare
The strongest hand is a trail: three cards of one rank, with A-A-A at the top and 2-2-2 at the bottom. Next is the pure sequence, a run in a single suit, then the ordinary sequence, a run in mixed suits. A colour is any three cards of one suit that are not in order. Below that sits a pair, and if nobody holds any of these, the highest single card decides. Remember that in Teen Patti a run beats a flush, the reverse of what many poker players expect.
Breaking ties
When two players hold the same kind of hand, compare from the top. Two colours are decided by their highest card, then the second, then the third. Two pairs are decided by the rank of the pair, then by the odd card. A-K-Q is usually treated as the top run, but where A-2-3 sits (top, second or bottom) depends on the house rules, so agree on it before you play.
Home-game vocabulary
- Boot: the small compulsory amount everyone puts into the pot to start a hand.
- Blind and seen: a blind player bets without looking at their cards; a seen player has looked and usually has to bet more per turn.
- Chaal: placing a bet to stay in the hand.
- Pack: folding your cards.
- Show: when only two players remain, one can pay to compare hands.
- Side show: a seen player asking the previous player to compare cards privately.
Popular variants
In Muflis the lowest hand wins. In AK47 every ace, king, four and seven is wild. Joker versions pick one or more wild cards at random. These are home-game variants; live casino tables use their own fixed rules.

What is the difference between a sequence and a pure sequence?
Both are three cards of consecutive rank, such as 5-6-7. In a pure sequence all three share one suit, for example 5-6-7 of spades, and it ranks just below a trail. An ordinary sequence mixes suits and ranks one step lower, but it still beats a colour, a pair and a high card.
Does a colour beat a sequence in Teen Patti?
No. In Teen Patti a sequence, a run of three cards, beats a colour, three cards of one suit that are not in order. This surprises many poker players, because in five-card poker a flush beats a straight. With only three cards a run is harder to make than a flush, so it ranks higher.
How are ties broken in Teen Patti?
Compare the two hands card by card, starting with the highest. For two colours or two high-card hands, the higher top card wins, then the second card, then the third. For two pairs, the higher pair wins, then the odd card. If the hands are still level, the table or house rules decide.
What do blind and seen mean in Teen Patti?
